Iranians’ Attitude towards Drug Abuse

Abstract

The national research project of Iranians’ attitude towards drug abuse, as the first comprehensive research in last 30 years, has been conducted in 24 provinces in 2004-2005. The method of the research is survey in which data gathered through a standard questionnaire. The stakeholders were 14000 ordinary people selected by random sampling in 24 provinces. Some major findings show: religious culture and family coherence are two main factors in negative attitude towards drug abuse. Youngsters are more tolerable regarding drug abuse. 1/3 of responders have seen at least one type of illicit drug and this shows that illicit drugs are widespread in Iran. According to the findings of the survey in different cities, it is not possible to make an integrated policy for the whole of the country.
