Abstract

Suicide is a multidimensional phenomenon and is a process which ranges from unhappiness, to suicidal tendencies, to attempted suicide, and to complete suicide. the present essay has investigated the attitude towards suicide of 16-40 year-old women of Yasouj City according to sociological and psychological variables via the survey method. Data analysis showed that the unmarried, the youth, the unemployed, and university students had more suicidal tendencies compared with the married, the middle aged, the employed, and housewives. The variables of religiousness and depression had negative and positive correlations with suicide respectively. Depression was the most effective variable in suicidal attitudes, and the effect of religiousness on suicide has been mostly indirect. Finally, two variables of depression and singleness could explain over the half of the total variance (53%) of respondents' tendencies toward suicide.
