Abstract

This paper is a sociological attempt to evaluate urban sustainable development indicators in Tehran based on accessible data. With respect to data gathering and analysing, this research is a combination of documentary method and using available data as well as past studies. Indicators of urban sustainability are divided into environmental, social and economic ones. Regarding environmental indicators, high levels of air pollution as well as high rate of energy consumption and a huge amount of trash and waste material, show the status of sustainable development in Tehran is undesirable. Also, with respect to social indicators, our findings suggest that, social participation and social justice are not desirable. Finally, indicators such as high rate of unemployment and the deterioration of buildings in some urban areas show economic indicators are also at a low level. Overall, considering three indicators, the situation of sustainable development indicators in Tehran is assessed inappropriate.
