This study, by examining the dynamics of power in Afghan migrant families with a focus on decision-making patterns, domains of power, methods of exercising power, and changes resulting from migration, demonstrates how power structures are influenced by the complex interplay between traditional Afghan culture and the conditions of migration. Decision-making patterns in these families are divided into six main categories: patriarchal, participatory, women-centered, generation-centered, network-centered, and situational. The domains of power are also concentrated in five key areas: economy, children's future, relocation, culture, and health. Power is exercised through authoritarian, interactive, soft, and coercive mechanisms. Additionally, the power structure in migration has been accompanied by changes, resistances, and challenges. The data for this study were collected through participant observation and in-depth interviews with 8 women and 11 migrant men in Qaem Town, Qom, and analyzed using thematic analysis. This research, while creating a space for a better understanding of intra-family dynamics and the effects of migration on gender, generational, and cultural relations, provides insights for policymakers, researchers, and social activists to design better programs and strategies to support migrant families. Migration is not only a challenge but also an opportunity to redefine roles and establish a new balance in family power structures.
