English

Children who participate in economic activities from a young age, particularly those already situated on the streets, face arduous, complex, and detrimental experiences. This study was conducted using a qualitative approach and the Grounded Theory methodology. The research participants comprised 15 children working on the streets in Rasht, who were purposefully selected. Data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews and analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding. The findings indicate that children working on the street encounter a form of “emotional duality,” wherein a relative sense of satisfaction from economic participation is intertwined with feelings of pity, contempt, rejection, and social invisibility. Furthermore, a “dual identity” is formed in these children, leading to a perpetual conflict between their childhood and adult roles. A state of “double abandonment” is also evident among these children, characterized by a simultaneous experience of lacking familial and social support, which children perceive through social comparison with their peers. Moreover, financial deprivations and a lack of opportunities for rest, recreation, and social interaction have reduced their lives to a monotonous cycle between home and the street and vice versa. This situation, by eliminating opportunities for leisure, familial, and social interactions, has resulted in the “stagnation of their lifeworld.” Ultimately, “persistent subordination,” as a reproducible state of deprivation and powerlessness, imposes stabilized conditions on their lives. This state of childhood lifeworld obstruction, conceptualized within the central category of “Appropriated Childhood,” signifies the gradual forfeiture of fundamental childhood experiences within the street setting.
