امروزه مصرف انرژی به یکی از مسائل مهم اجتماعی تبدیل شده و برنامه‌ریزی و سیاست‌گذاری برای ترغیب مردم به‌منظور مصرف بهینۀ آن، مشترکین را در یک دوراهی اجتماعی (ترجیحات شخصی در برابر اولویت‌های اجتماعی)، قرار داده است. هدف از انجام این تحقیق، بررسی گرایش‌ها (دگرگرایانه/ خودخواهانه) به‌عنوان یک نوع دوراهی اجتماعی مشترکین خانگی در مصرف گاز و شناسایی عوامل اجتماعی مؤثر بر آن است. پس از مرور ادبیات تحقیق و مفاهیم مربوط به دوراهی اجتماعی، فرضیه‌ها تعریف شدند. رویکرد این تحقیق کمّی بوده و از روش پیمایش برای انجام آن استفاده شد. ابزار گرداوری داده‌ها، پرسشنامۀ محقق‌ساخته است و به منظور بررسی روایی از اعتبار صوری و برای سنجش پایایی پرسشنامه از ضریب آلفا کرونباخ استفاده شده است. جامعۀ آماری، مشترکین خانگی استان مازندران بودند که با نمونه‌گیری خوشه‌ای تصادفی، تعداد 510 نفر از آن‌ها به‌عنوان نمونۀ آماری انتخاب شدند. یافته‌های تحقیق نشان داد مصرف گاز توسط مشترکین خانگی تا حد زیادی همسو با منافع جمعی است. علاوه بر این، نتایج حاصل از تحلیل رگرسیون نشان داد ارزشهای محیط‌زیستی، اعتماد نهادی، هنجارهای اجتماعی و خودکارآمدی بیشترین تأثیر را بر گرایش‌های دیگرخواهانه در مصرف گاز داشته‌اند. بدین ترتیب، در سطح جامعۀ محلی، افراد در دوراهی اجتماعی (ترجیحات فردی/ اولویت‌های جمعی)، تحت تأثیر عوامل پیش‌گفته، منافع جمعی را ترجیح دادند.
